O Death! In this grave matter of the other world (of whether someone survives death or not), in which (even the learned) have doubts, please preach that to me! Nachiketaa does not choose anything other than this boon that enters into a subtle realm (an extremely difficult subject).

It is with great difficulty that one finds a teacher who understands the other world, who is steeped in God, who has completely renounced this world. Most god-persons that we see today can be seen to be conducting worldly business, while being happy to be called God themselves. A person close to God will never abide such blasphemy, because he understands well the chasm that separates the Creator, Protector and Destroyer of this Universe vis-à-vis the individual Soul. The student who is lucky enough to find such a person should not give up the chance to learn from this master, whatever obstacles or temptations – of which there will be many – that may lie in this path.

The end of this section essentially marks the end of the story of Yama and Nachiketaa, though references are interspersed in the rest of the Upanishad, too. Henceforth the Upanishatkaara focuses on the teaching that he really wants to pass on.
